Born in Berkeley, California in 1946, Bob
attended Berkeley Public Schools and the University of
California with a major in
Physics. He is a career employee at UC Berkeley and

Microfabrication Lab, a 10,000
sq. ft. cutting-edge semiconductor research facility used by
more than 360 researchers.
Bob’s interest in orchids
began in 1975. He specializes in cool growing oncidinae
hybrids, specifically
odontoglossums. He grows in two greenhouses, a
home-hobby glasshouse in Berkeley shared
with his partner of 32 years, John Leathers, and a cooperative
greenhouse in Pacifica, California.
He hybridizes and does his own plant propagation.
In addition to orchids, he enjoys classical
piano, swimming and trekking.
