George Carr "Cats, Swans and Goblins" |
Mr. Carr is an
accredited American Orchid Society Judge in the
Florida North Central Judging Center in Tampa,
Florida. He has been growing orchids for over
twenty years. His interest in the genus
Cycnoches began in 1993 when he asked to do his
Student Judge research on the genus. His paper,
Cycnoches – One Hundred Sixty-five Years of
Confusion was completed and presented in 1995.
In 1996, the paper was awarded the first
American Orchid Society Education Certificate of
Appreciation. Since then, he has continued
his research and writings on the genus and
the related genera of the subtribe Catasetinae. |

He has given a number of presentations on the subtribe
including talks in Cali, Colombia in 1997, Piracanjuba,
Brazil in May 2000, and at the Spring 2000 AOS Trustees
meeting in Clearwater, Florida. He is the co-author of
the description of a new species Cycnoches barthiorum G.
Carr & E.A. Christenson that was published in the
June 1999 issue of Orchids. His article, The Cycnoches
ventricosum Complex was published in the Orchid Digest
issue for January, February, March 2000. His student
paper can be found on the Florida North Central Judging

Papers section.
George Carr’s program “Cats, Swans and Goblins” is
an introduction to the five members of the subtribe
Catasetinae, Catasetum, Cycnoches, Mormodes, Clowesia
and Dresssleria. He will show a few slides of each
species to illustrate their difference with information
on how to grow them.
