CYMBIDIUMS: THEIR CULTURE AND GROWING NEEDS

It is easy to agree that Cymbidiums are one of the most luxuriant plants that we can have in our collections. When cared for and given proper attention during their growth, they can reward us with a display of blossoms not easily equaled in size or quantity by many other orchids. With the emphasis on hybridization that has continued in recent years, color, form and size have changed remarkably from those of the species plants which we do not often see. Both miniature and standard size hybrids are tolerant to a wide range of temperature extremes and in our area make excellent outdoor plants. Nevertheless, because of their growth habit, long leaves and large pseudobulbs, many an interested hobbyist has turned away from purchasing a cymbidium.

Cymbidiums are not as intimidating as they may appear and they can be quite forgiving of mistakes often made by us in our enthusiasm to prompt multiple spikes and dozens of blooms. Our speaker for the April 13th meeting is one of our local experts who will help take away any lingering doubts on how to care for Cymbidiums. Dennis Olivas is known to most members as the Orchid Addict and one of the most diverse growers in the Bay Area (D & D Flowers: Half Moon Bay) He is an AOS Judge, a frequent and generous contributor of his time and skills, as well as an active member with various committees and Societies. He will discuss the various types of Cymbidiums, cultural needs and what may grow best for you. An additional area that Dennis will cover is repotting. This often discussed but frequently overlooked cultural requirement can be complicated at first glance. Dennis will have a demonstration front and center in the auditorium for everyone to clearly see how to go about the task. Before you leave the raffle table (which Dennis will also provide from his personal collection) you'll be ready for your first cymbidium (or second, or third, or...!).
